5 WINTER WARMING SKINCARE TIPS!

"A hot chocolate (and a good moisturiser) a day keeps the Winter Blues Away!"
Here are some key tips I share with my patients for maintaining healthy feet & hands during winter months...
Moisture Management is crucial: I always emphasize that winter air strips moisture from the skin, making feet & hands prone to cracking and fissures. I recommend patients apply a urea-based moisturiser daily, focusing on heels and any areas prone to dryness. For severe cases, I suggest applying moisturiser at night and wearing cotton socks to enhance absorption.
Proper Footwear Selection: I see too many patients who prioritise fashion over function in winter. I advise choosing boots with adequate toe room, good arch support, and waterproof materials. The boots should have enough space for warm socks without creating pressure points. I particularly stress avoiding tight-fitting fashion boots that can reduce circulation.
Sock Strategy Matters: I recommend moisture-wicking synthetic or merino wool socks over cotton, which retains moisture and increases blister risk. Patients should change socks if they become damp from sweat or snow. For those prone to cold feet, I suggest layering with thin liner socks under thicker wool socks.
Temperature Transition Awareness: I warn patients about the dangers of rapid temperature changes. Going from cold outdoor conditions directly to hot baths or heating sources can cause chilblains or worsen existing circulation issues. Gradual warming is always safer.
Daily Inspection Routine: Winter conditions can mask developing problems, so I encourage patients to check their feet daily for cuts, blisters, or color changes, especially those with diabetes or circulation issues. Early intervention prevents minor issues from becoming serious complications.
